Buying Guide for Golf club for High Handicappers

A lot of technology has gone into golf equipment and considering it is rocket science (or at least derived from it), we may need some help to get the most out of our next purchase, whether it’s a driver, hybrid, putter or even a sleeve of balls.

We’ve been designing and fitting clubs for decades, and from my experience helping golfers find the best clubs for them, I’ve picked up some information we can use the next time we walk into a shop. I highly recommend working with a professional club fitter, but following these 10 tips could be the next best thing.

1. When buying a driver, shorter is better than longer, closed is better than neutral. Many of today’s drivers are sold with shafts 45 inches or longer; the average driver on the PGA Tour is 44.5 inches. What do the pros know that we don’t? The longer the club, the harder it is to hit squarely. Any way we slice it, shorter is better with wood. Speaking of slicing, a fault likely caused by an open clubface at impact, getting fitted for a driver with a closed-face angle will help.

2. Consider making our 3-wood our “driver.” Can we hit our 3-wood as far as our driver? Then we don’t have enough loft on our driver. For most golfers, even 11 degrees of loft isn¹t enough, so why not buy a 3-, 5-, or 7-wood combination instead of the traditional driver, 3-, 5-wood configuration and put three clubs in the bag that will actually help us? Most golfers could drop five strokes with just that simple change.

3. Don’t even think about including a 3-, 4- and possibly even a 5-iron in our next set. Over the past 25 years, manufacturers have been gradually and silently lowering the loft on their irons to say their products “hit it farther.” As a result, the 3- and 4-irons have so little loft that they are virtually unhittable for the average golfer. The solution?Hybrids. This leads us to…

4. The trick to buying hybrids is to match them exactly to the irons they are replacing. The idea here is to replace our long irons with easier-to-hit hybrids that go the same distance—not longer or shorter. Make sure to replace our long irons with hybrids of the same length and loft to avoid distance gaps.

5. Don’t confuse hybrids with fairway woods. They are separate animals. To me, hybrids should be iron replacements, but there are hybrids out there that have the same lofts and lengths as fairway woods, which can be confusing. After all, fairway woods are just as easy to hit as hybrids, so what’s the point? But here’s a rule of thumb: If we sweep shots cleanly off the turf, fairway woods are for us. We will be better off with hybrids if we have a steeper swing.

6. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all golf clubs. We don’t buy suits off a one-size-fits-all rack, so why do the same with clubs? Golfers come in all shapes, sizes, and swing skills, necessitating clubs with different lengths, weights, lofts, and lie angles. If a club is too long, too light, or too heavy, we will not consistently deliver the club head so it is square at impact. If the lie angle is wrong, the heel or toe will be up, leading to a push or a pull, even if we make a perfect swing.

7. When selecting wedges, think about our home course. Are the greens small, fast, and elevated? We need plenty of lofts. Are the bunkers filled with lots of soft sand? Our sand wedge should have more bounce or a wider sole. Is the turf firm, resulting in a lot of tight lies? We will want less bounce.

8. We must check the “three L’s” when we putter around. Does our new putter look like a branding iron, or does it have a classic shape? Whatever the case, if we get the three L’s—loft, length, lie angle—wrong, it doesn’t matter what it looks like. We won’t putt well. At impact, the sole must be parallel to the ground, and the loft must be correct; the combination imparts a true roll. Nothing else will do. A putter with the wrong length and lie angle will cause pushes and pulls. Too little or too much loft will cause the ball to bounce and roll offline.

9. The worse we are, the more we need custom-fit equipment. Custom clubs are not just for low handicappers and pros. They could play well with garden tools. The worse (or newer) we are, the more we need clubs that properly match us and our swing. The game has enough impediments. We don’t need another with ill-fitting clubs.

10. Don’t forget about the ball. Ball technology is so much better that we no longer have to choose between a rock and a marshmallow. In general, we want a ball with the low spin of a driver and a high spin off a wedge. But most golfers should remember three things: distance, distance, distance. Extra yardage off the tee is far more important than a bit more spin around the greens.

It is one of the best golf clubs for high Handicappers. The TaylorMade M4 iron set replaces the version called TaylorMade M2 2017 irons, which was another most popular iron last time around, so it has a lot to live up to.

The M2 was renowned for expanse and forgiveness, and the M4 irons continue in this vein. The shorter irons could be too, but they dampen them down a little to enable the player to have a bit more distance control. Here are some important features are given below:

  • The topline undercut has been thinned to 1.2 millimeters, allowing saved weight to be used to lower the center of gravity for ease in getting shots airborne.
  • This won’t come as a surprise given the lofts, but they were two clubs longer than my gamers in the mid irons.
  • The TaylorMade M4 irons are designed to be the company’s longest, slimmer curved line rather than the dumbbell shape of the M2. Very forgiving.
  • Balls hit on the bottom grooves launched only 1 to 1.5 degrees lower than flush shots.
  • It is still there to increase the speed of low center strikes and combined with the thinner leading edge that is just 1mm thick now, TaylorMade says that the 4 to 7 irons are at the CT limits that apply to woods.
  • Lack of the feedback that the best golfer seeks.
  • It might not be suitable for people who want cheaper golf clubs.

The Taylor Made M4 irons are definitely one of the best Golf Clubs for High Handicappers. TaylorMade M4 irons are a very strong offering in the super game improvement segment.  They pack a ton of forgiveness, and the strong lofts make them very long.  For the chronic slicer, the draw-boosting offset will be a bonus.

Of course, it all comes down to what we like, what we want, and how much we can afford. Ultimately, the only person who needs to be pleased is us. Spend some time looking around and comparing prices. Inventory and prices can vary from store to store. Stick within the budget and find a set of clubs that match our abilities and goals.

Another decision we need to make when buying new clubs is determining the brand to buy.  Is it better to spend the money on a top-name brand, or should we go for one of the value brands?  The price difference may make a new set of value brand clubs seem more appealing.
